Carrier Rate of Campylobacter jejuni From Children and Dogs in Chullabuk-Do

Abstract
Campylobacter jejuni infection in Korea has been reported in 1981, but the epidemiological information was laking in the report. Therefore this study was undertaken to determine the Campylobacter carrier rate of the health children and dogs in Chullabuk-Do. Also it was to compare the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates from humans and dogs.
In order to determine the Campylobacter carrier rate of healthy children 549 stool samples were cultured during June to July 1984. To determine carrier rate of dogs, cultules were made from 259 fecal samples taken in Chullabuk-DO in November 1983 and July 1984. To find out antimicrobial susceptibility of humans and dogs isolate, 7 cultures from healthy children and 19 from dogs were tested. The following results were obtained.
1. The carrier rate in healthy children was 1.3%.
2. The isolation rate of the organism from dogs was 10.8%. The highest rate of 15.1% was observed in June, While the lowest of 4.4% was observed in July.
3. All of the isolates from healthy children and dogs were susceptible to amikacin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamicin and kanamycin. To ampicillin 71.4% of the strains from healthy children and 26.3% of the strains from dogs showed resistance. To other antibiotics healthy children strain showed more frequent resistance than did the dogs strain.
